Description: This series of three films aims to demonstrate multilingual education in practice. It was conceptualised in response to initial findings from the MultiLila research project which highlighted the ubiquitous use of multilingual approaches in the classroom. Teachers in Hyderabad attended a two-day workshop which aimed to explore these practices and look at ways in which the use of multiple languages can be made more purposeful, to better support learning.
Three teachers participated in the film project, to enable a wider understanding of both current practice and experiments with using language in different ways in their classrooms. The teachers come from very different schools in Hyderabad, India: a low-cost private English medium primary school; a private Waldorf education-inspired school on the outskirts of the city serving children of informed parents looking for an alternative system of education and a government-run primary school with a large tribal population.
In the three films, the teachers show how they are integrating their learners’ languages into their day-to-day teaching. Their lessons illustrate how multilingual approaches can be adopted alongside a target language, with a range of subject content.
