Cells employ complex mechanisms allowing genes to be switched ON and OFF. In her work, Claudia Martinho explores one of these mechanisms – epigenetics – in tomato plants. She studies paramutation, a mysterious epigenetic phenomenon that switches OFF and silences genes causing aberrant inheritance patterns. Since paramutation affects how traits are inherited her work can help understand how genomes work and how genetic information is carried across plant generations. In the future, we aim to harness these epigenetic mechanisms to increase phenotypic diversity in crops and enhance crop breeding.
