Abstract: | Lecture given at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, on 27 September 2014.
Our society is addicted to materials. Industry generates one-third of all energy related carbon dioxide emissions, and global demand for energy intensive materials - steel, concrete, plastics, paper and aluminium - is predicted to at least double by 2050. Achieving a 50% cut emissions by 2050, against a doubling in demand, will require a 75% reduction in emissions for every tonne of material produced. Process efficiency improvements are unable to deliver such a large cut in emissions, however, if materials can be used more efficiently, delivering the same services with less material, then the targeted emissions reduction might be possible. Dr Jonathan Cullen is a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, and University Lecturer in Energy, Transport and Urban Infrastructure at the University of Cambridge. His research interests include whole energy systems, energy and material demand reduction and low-carbon energy technologies. |
