Abstract: | Democracy and Education, published in 1916, has been praised and reviled – and often overlooked. However, in proposing a complete philosophy of education and account of its role in society, and in comprehensively critiquing contemporary practices which are still prevalent a century later, its scope and force have rarely been equalled.
In this seminar, leading experts will call for a re-evaluation of how Dewey’s book has shaped the philosophy and history of education – and of how relevant and challenging it remains. They will propose the convention of a major conference in 2016 to do so, and discuss possibilities for designing new research to inform the conference and broaden its impact. |
